MY JOURNEY

In 2007 I was completing an MA in Fashion Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Although I made it to one of the most prestigious Design schools, I felt lost and was searching for meaning and a deeper purpose in life. What I thought would make me happy did not. Thank goodness! because amidst the crazy world of fashion was the beginning of a journey. A good friend of mine handed me a book called the ‘Diamond Cutter’ and suggested I do Yoga. I took my first class at Jivamutki Yoga in London. I absolutely loved it and felt a deep peace and connection for the first time. My yoga teacher at the time asked me whether I knew who Dharma Mittra was and told me that one day I should go to New York to meet him because he was the ‘real deal.’

A few months later my sister and I decided to spend the Christmas holidays in New York and finally to meet Dharma. I remember it was a cold and snowy day but as we looked up on the 2nd floor, there was a warm glow coming from the studio window. As we entered the building, there was a steep flight of stairs that said ‘Welcome Home.’ It sounds strange but it felt like I was coming home, back to something that felt so familiar. We opened the door and there were students already quietly warming up. The room was filled with incense, gentle chanting music in the back ground and a very special vibration. It felt like we had found this precious jewel, a quiet refuge in the middle of this bustling city.

Now looking back, I think we were quite courageous to take a 'Master' class since we were really just beginners. At the time Dharma would cue a forearm stand after every downward dog. That's a lot of forearm stands for a beginner. There were puddles of sweat on my mat and as I glanced over at my sister she gave me a look as if to say, I'm gonna kill you later!  At one point it got quite embarrassing as we both kept falling, almost taking down the people next to us. Even though it was such a physically challenging class, I also felt a deep sense of peace and bliss. When I met Dharma I knew I had found something special, a real Master. He was the real deal!

I am infinitely grateful to my teacher Sri Dharma Mittra for his eternal love and compassion, for his humility and generosity in sharing the spiritual knowledge. He is the blazing light that has guided me back to my true Self. I offer my deepest Thanks to Dr Vasant Lad, Dr Naina Marballi, Divya Alter for sharing their life and love of Ayurveda. Geshe Michael Roach for his profound Buddhist teachings. Deepest gratitude to my family and to those whom I met along my journey, my fellow teachers and students who have inspired me and kept me on the path.

“The Spiritual Sun already blazes within as the Innermost Self.  Harmony between you and the Higher Self is the destination"
